Material

Board body: HDPE

Material selection rationale

Rigid sheet
Keeps the working surface flat.
Machinable edges
The outline and carrying hole can be cut from stock sheet.
Bulk material at the surface
The working surface is the HDPE sheet itself rather than a thin coating, so a cut exposes more of the same polymer.

How it becomes a product

  1. Make the sheet: HDPE is extruded or compression-moulded into thick sheet.
  2. Cut and finish: The outline and handle opening are machined, and edges are rounded. Cutting and edge finishing turn sheet into a board; edge shape and any grip or hole are design features.

Preparation routes

Ethene route

Catalytic addition polymerisation. A catalyst builds relatively unbranched polyethylene chains. This differs from the high-pressure radical process for LDPE even though both begin with ethene. The repeat formula alone cannot distinguish this material from LDPE: branch structure is the missing information that links catalyst choice to packing and stiffness.

Catalyst and process control determine chain structure. Some commercial grades use small amounts of comonomer; this overview follows the ethene backbone. Controlled chain length and comonomer content select a grade, rather than changing a pellet into a finished bottle.
