Transparent ruler

Clear acrylic keeps the drawing visible beneath the measuring edge.

Material

Acrylic ruler body: PMMA

Material selection rationale

Optical clarity
Lets you align the ruler with marks on the paper.
Rigid straight edge
Supports measuring and drawing a line.
Geometric accuracy
A straight edge and stable printed scale provide measurement; transparency helps alignment.

How it becomes a product

  1. Make the acrylic stock: PMMA can be cast into sheet or extruded from polymer resin.
  2. Shape and mark: The stock is cut and finished to the ruler shape, then a measuring scale is applied. This illustrates a fabrication route, not the cited brand's factory process. Edges and graduations are finished after the acrylic is formed; notches and damaged edges can promote cracking.

Addition polymerisation. MMA molecules join through their double bonds. Their ester groups remain as side groups; no acid-and-diol pair is required. The presence of ester groups in a monomer does not make this a condensation polymerisation: the growing backbone is built through carbon–carbon bonds.

Initiators and controlled curing support polymerisation. Sheet can be cast directly or made by extruding previously polymerised PMMA. Cast-sheet curing makes polymer and sheet together; extruded sheet begins with polymer made earlier.
