Overview

A tertiary bromoalkane whose bromine-bearing carbon has no hydrogen.

Three methyl groups surround the carbon bonded to bromine, strongly hindering the usual SN2 backside approach. Elimination can remove a hydrogen from a neighbouring methyl group to form 2-methylpropene; the absence of hydrogen on the bromine-bearing carbon does not prevent elimination.
