Overview
A terminal alkyne with an acidic hydrogen at the triple bond.
Its terminal hydrogen can be removed by a sufficiently strong base to form an acetylide. This property differs from the behaviour of internal but-2-yne. Under mercury-catalysed hydration, the carbon skeleton is retained and the carbonyl product is butan-2-one.
