Overview
The straight-chain four-carbon primary amide of butanoic acid.
The terminal CONH2 group contains the amide nitrogen rather than an ordinary amine site. Hydrolysis returns butanoic acid or butanoate under suitable conditions. Counting the carbonyl carbon explains the four-carbon name despite only three carbons in the attached alkyl group.
