Overview
An aryl chloride that behaves differently from an ordinary chloroalkane.
Chlorine is bonded directly to an sp2 carbon in the aromatic ring. The usual backside SN2 pathway of a primary chloroalkane is not available at that carbon. A shared C–Cl bond therefore does not justify copying chloroalkane hydrolysis conditions onto chlorobenzene.
