Overview

A ketohexose connecting carbonyl chemistry with cyclic sugar structures.

Its open-chain carbonyl is a ketone, unlike the aldehyde of glucose. Intramolecular addition of a hydroxyl group produces cyclic hemiketal forms, and different ring sizes may occur. Classification as a ketose refers to the open-chain framework, not to a visible free ketone in every drawing.
