Silicon (Si) is chemical element 14, in period 3, group 14.
Crystalline silicon is a major semiconductor material whose electrical behaviour can be changed by controlled doping. Silicon dioxide is used in glass manufacture and also occurs as quartz. The element and its oxide are distinct materials.
