Overview

A two-carbon alkane whose single-bond rotation produces different conformations.

Staggered and eclipsed arrangements interconvert by rotation about the carbon–carbon bond. The staggered arrangement has lower energy. These conformations keep the same atom connectivity and do not represent separate constitutional isomers.
