Overview
An unbranched six-carbon aldehyde with a single terminal carbonyl.
The polar aldehyde group is attached to a larger hydrocarbon fragment than in ethanal or propanal. It retains aldehyde oxidation chemistry, giving hexanoic acid or hexanoate. Carbonyl-group recognition alone cannot distinguish its chain length from those of other aldehydes.
