Overview

An amino acid with an additional basic amino group in its side chain.

The extra nitrogen means its charge cannot be inferred from the alpha-amino and carboxyl groups alone. Lysine can carry a positive side-chain charge in near-neutral aqueous conditions. This is a useful extension of the simple two-group zwitterion model.
