Overview

The smallest alkane, with four equivalent carbon–hydrogen bonds.

Its tetrahedral carbon has no carbon–carbon bond or functional group. Complete combustion gives carbon dioxide and water. Radical chlorination can replace successive hydrogens, so a reaction mixture need not contain only chloromethane.
