Overview
An aryl ester in which phenyl is bonded through oxygen to an acetyl group.
The phenolic oxygen has been acylated, so the molecule contains no free phenolic O–H bond. Hydrolysis gives phenol or phenoxide, together with ethanoic acid or ethanoate, depending on pH. This oxygen linkage distinguishes it from aromatic ketones, where carbon is bonded directly to the carbonyl carbon.
