PPV
A conjugated polymer used as the emitting layer in an early organic light-emitting diode (OLED).
A conjugated polymer used as the emitting layer in an early organic light-emitting diode (OLED).
- Material form
- Polymer film
- Function
- Light emission
- Application
- Polymer light-emitting diode
Structure
Para-phenylene rings alternate with vinylene groups along the backbone. Conjugation connects the electronic structure to optical behaviour.
Properties and function
- Conjugated backbone
- Supports electronic excitation along segments of the polymer chain.
- Electroluminescence
- An electrically excited film can emit light as injected charges recombine.
- Film formation
- A processable precursor allows an active polymer layer to be formed between electrodes.
Device and processing
Form the film
Deposit the solution-processable precursor and convert it to PPV.
Inject charge
Electrodes supply electrons and holes to the polymer layer.
Emit light
Radiative decay of excited states produces light.
Evidence and limits
Burroughes et al. (1990): green–yellow emission from a PPV diode, as reported in the published abstract.
